It is going out to 137 members of our opt-in e-mail
list; SCA club contacts; RAC members.
Last
night's (Dec. 17) scheduled RAC meeting was the best-attended yet,
with more than 70 residents present. Minutes of the meeting will
be distributed soon, most likely next week, but we want to share a
couple of highlights with you.
1-- As we've taken pains to point out on several
occasions, our committee is charged with planning for the INTERIOR
amenities that will go into the 50,200 square feet of new
recreational space to be built for us by Del Webb. While we have
no role in determining what the exterior amenities will be, we
have passed along all outside-amenities requests and suggestions
to SCACA Resident Board Member Favil West, who is our liaison with
Del Webb in negotiating for those features.
Favil appeared at our Dec.17 meeting to give us an overview of
where we stand on the subject of outside amenities. He stressed
that we have little negotiating power with Del Webb with regard to
the outside recreational offerings, but he is relying on the
company's good faith and is hopeful that most of the outside
amenities we've asked for, through Favil, will be incorporated
when the 10,000-square-foot Community Activities Building-2, also
known as the satellite facility, is built.
Among the requests Favil has presented to Del
Webb:
- A park-like setting, with benches and shade
features.
- Tennis courts.
- Bocce courts.
- Barbecue facilities
- Swimming pool with greater depth than we
presently have at Anthem Center, possibly with a diving board
- Possibly outdoor shuffleboard
Let's keep our fingers crossed that our hopes
can be turned into reality when it comes to the outdoor amenities.
2-- The nascent (but fast-growing) Performing Arts Club made a
personal presentation to RAC. The presentation was very well
delivered by Mr. Karl Bruner, and the main thrust of Karl's
comments was to advocate inclusion of some type of theater
facility in CAB-1, the 40,000-square-foot building.
There were many questions and comments after Karl sat down, with
audience and RAC members at times participating in what this
writer would describe as a very healthy dialogue. The "theater
issue" is indicative of one of the major "problems" RAC must deal
with, which is how to accommodate the legitimate and justifiable
needs of our residents in the context of filling a relatively
limited amount of space. It remains to be seen how creative all
the interested parties will be in developing a workable solution,
but I hope those who were there for the discussion will agree that
it was eye-opening and productive.
And now for something completely different:
On December 12, about 80 residents accepted our invitation for a
private tour of the new Henderson Multigenerational Center/Aquatic
Complex, which opens the first week in January. The facility,
located just a few miles away from us at Green Valley Parkway and
Paseo Verde, encompasses 84,000 square feet under its roof, as
well as a bevy of outdoor water attractions.
Our tour was coordinated by Rich Robles, Recreation Superintendent
for the Henderson Parks & Recreation Department. Rich is retiring
in just a few days after many years of service to the City of
Henderson, and this Center is clearly his crowning achievement.
There is much to be learned from what will probably come to be
known as the Multi-Gen Center. One of the most important
ingredients is how much of the space is designed for maximum
flexibility, something very much in our minds as we plan for our
own facilities. We also saw how economies can be realized in the
design elements without sacrificing much in the way of style and
looks. In addition, we paid attention to amenities that are not
likely to be part of our own planning but will be available at the
Multi-Gen Center for our residents to enjoy. Don't forget: We are
Henderson residents, too, and the Henderson Multi-Gen Center is
OUR Center as much as anyone else's.
We want you to see what we saw on our tour. So here is a link to
an online photo album of 34 pictures taken that day. I've tried to
make the captions tell as much of the story as possible, and any
comments/feedback you want to give about the album, or individual
photos, will be most welcome. And if appropriate, your input will
be shared with everyone on RAC.

Once the album appears on your screen, it should play out as a
self-running slide show, and you can use the feature at the bottom
left of the slide-show screen to speed up or slow down the pace.
