Sun City Anthem Garden Club asks...

Are You Interested in growing more than rocks and trees?

Join us for a comprehensive and balanced programs of meetings of the Garden Club. We offer substance for the Novice and the Master.

If your subject doesn't get "ventilated" during the speakers prepared "lesson", our free swinging Q&A sessions will. Our Panels, made up of the speaker, our Master Gardener members, and other seasoned gardening members, bring a broad range of experiences to the table.

Starting in February, we are planning to have a coffee break, then more time for Q&A with our Panel.

We meet on the second Tuesday of the month in the Anthem Center.

February 8: Natural Pest Control, M.L. Robinson, Area Specialist, University of Nevada, Reno, Cooperative Extension. He is an entertaining and up beat speaker, who also knows his subjects

Oh, bring any questions you have about palm trees, ML's in expert in them, too.

March 8: Things to ask your candidate landscaper, by Glen Danner, Accredited Irrigation Auditor. While this subject is especially important to new residents, Glen has information that will help the rest of us to upgrade our irrigations systems economically.

March 19: Breakfast at the Springs Reserve. This annual event draws large crowds. Perhaps we can rent a mini-bus as we did so successfully in 2002.

April 12: Successfully Gardening Against All Odds; Linn Mills, perhaps
also "Growing plants in Containers". In addition to his excellent
columns in the Review-Journal, Linn is full time at the Springs Reserve.

May 5: Garden Tour: Tentative, we must have assurance of enough volunteers to run this popular event. We need to rebuild our membership roles this year so that we can manage a tour in 2006.

May 24: Tour to Master Gardeners' Orchard, and Turner Greenhouses (cactus and succulents). After the tour, Lunch together.

September 13: Landscape Design, to include water features, artificial turf, lighting.

October 11: Plants Best Suited to Southern Nevada. Speaker from local nursery, to be announced later.

November 8: Winterizing your Garden; Linn Mills again:-) We're
delighted to have him volunteer to cover a subject dear to him.

December 13: Holiday Decorating workshop. Possible luncheon.

A new feature which is being offered each month is to have one member each month invite members to come to her or his garden. It could be:

  1. To show a feature or
  2. To ask for suggestions for changes, corrections of a problem.

Speed limits revisited

The City of Henderson has been approached by some Sun City Anthem residents who propose lowering the 45-mile-per-hour speed limit to 35 miles per hour on Sun City Anthem Parkway and Sun City Anthem Drive. Many residents favor this and many oppose it.

The purpose of conducting a brief survey is to learn how the 1,300 subscribers to the Anthem Compendium feel about the issue so that hard numbers can be obtained.

These are some of the arguments in favor of lowering the speed limit:

  • The current limit of 45 miles per hour is too dangerous, which is reason enough to lower it.
  • With people other than the seniors of Sun City Anthem using these roads, we need additional controls to limit their speed.
  • If the speed limit is lowered to 35 miles per hour, these roads will be legally accessible for golf carts.

These are some of the arguments in favor of keeping the limit at 45 miles per hour:

  • The roads were designed for those speeds, with long stretches of uninterrupted road and with few points of ingress and egress. There are no homes opening directly onto them.
  • There is so little police enforcement of speed limits now that lowered limits will continue to be violated by drivers. See the FHWA Study report titled: "Effects of Raising and Lowering Speed Limits on Selected Roadway Sections"
  • Allowing golf carts on the two roads will create a false sense of security and lead to serious accidents caused by fast moving vehicles.

Please let me know below how you feel about this issue. The results will be compiled and shared with our community leadership. The Survey is located on my web site at: http://www.anthemwebs.com/communitynews.htm
