Sun City Anthem Garden Club meeting
March 8, 2005 at 9:00 a.m.

The Sun City Anthem Garden Club meeting on 8 March is going to be something special:-) Residents who are not members are invited to attend this special session.

The Club is working on a document which can be provided to new residents to assist them in obtaining landscaping and irrigation which will satisfy their needs for years to come. We hope to be able to assist new residents to avoid costly pitfalls. For example, trees should not be on the same irrigation schedule as shrubs and annuals. Provisions should be made to expand the "circle" of irrigation as trees spread their roots. These special needs requires a separate irrigation line or lines ("zones") for trees.

Our speaker this month, Glenn Danner, is a Certified Irrigation Auditor. We plan to put his recommendations and warnings into a brochure which can go to new residents while they are under the 90 day "gun" to complete their landscaping. By asking potential landscape architects a few of these questions, residents can be in a better position to evaluate the offerings of potential bidders.

Glenn also comes with good advice for residents who are upgrading their present irrigation systems. His recommendations are especially pertinent for those of you who may be considering retrofitting your gardens to Xeriscape. There is a serious risk of losing trees which have been established in turf landscapes. They have been living under "rain forest" conditions. Unless they are given special consideration during the conversion, they may just dry up and die:-(

Join us at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, munchies and socializing with other gardeners. Glenn's formal presentation will begin at 9:30 a.m. He's an excellent, humorous and animated speaker, ex-high school science teacher. After Glenn's talk, there will be a Q&A session where you may get answers to other gardening questions.

This month we're trying something new. Each person who brings something from her or his garden will receive a raffle ticket. At the end of the meeting, we will have a drawing for a generous gift certificate donated by Moon Valley Nursery.

Bring anything from your garden, a flower, a branch from a shrub or tree, a bottle with an insect, even a photograph.

Hope to see you there, 9:00 a.m. at the Anthem Center.

Cordially,
Bob Connelly
President
Sun City Anthem Garden Club

P.S. Oh, I should mention that we always invite our speaker to have lunch with us at Trumpets or Buckman's. Glenn has already accepted -- join us for a Dutch Treat lunch with other gardeners.
