Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, R-Reno, has decided to take her Nevada-styled Prop 13 initiative directly to the voters in an effort to avoid having the Democrat-controlled Assembly take possession of her Bill and undermine it into a weak proposal similar to the one that was introduced into a Joint Committee on Friday. “That proposal”, said Angle, “is unlike anything the voters have been demanding. The Legislature here is fully aware the citizens in Nevada are demanding a passage of my Nevada style “Prop 13” bill. If I allow the Legislature to take control of my bill, they may merge their bill into mine and try to pass off a counterfeit with my name on it in an attempt to confuse the taxpayers.”

Mrs. Angle emphasizes that although this Legislature is fully aware of widespread support for her Prop 13 bill, many of the elected officials have been reluctant to sign on to her bill, preferring instead to support a tax-reform proposal that appeases special interests groups and big government. “Their proposal acknowledges that population growth in Nevada has increased 66% in the past decade. Most Legislators are also aware most of these are transplant Californians who grew up with the Jarvis-Gann “Proposition 13”. Many in this Legislature would like to find a way to divert these voters by accepting passage of their bill instead of a Nevada style “Prop 13.”

Mrs. Angle accepts that until the voters have a chance to pass her Nevada style “Prop 13” at the ballot, she will unenthusiastically vote “yes” in the Assembly on any measure that will pass some reasonable immediate relief for the hard-working taxpayers. However, she believes that their weakened tax measure will fail to squelch constituent demands being made for her Nevada style “Prop 13” measure.

“This tax-revolt has already begun, and this Legislative body is in denial, if they think they can fool the voters like they did in 1980 when they derailed the adoption of question 6, the first Nevada style “Prop 13”. Nevada citizens are frustrated waiting for real permanent relief from a tax & spend Legislature.”

“I made a promise to the people, and I keep my promises.” She adds, “I am fully committed to offering the voters a real choice at the ballot - my Nevada-styled Prop 13 as opposed to some elaborate façade that does not address the need for real property tax relief.“

What your State legislators have to say about Sharron Angle's Nevada-styled Prop 13 initiative...

State Senator Warren B. Hardy II, District 12

"...However, it will be necessary, even if this is adopted, to ultimately provide a constitutional change to effect long term relief and Mrs. Angle’s proposal will certainly be central to those discussions...."

State Senator Sandra Tiffany

"...I do support a Legislative backed Prop 13 approach with a roll back to 2003, 1% base tax, cap of 2% and freeze in value until sold. I would also support a Prop 13 initiative brought by the citizens of Nevada...."
