Sun City Anthem Community Association, Inc.

The Association is working with the City of Henderson on a yet another "study" of traffic here on the Anthem Loop. The Anthem Loop is defined as: Sun City Anthem Drive and that portion of Anthem Parkway that lies south of Sun City Anthem Drive.

Guess what? They are going to lower the speed limit to 35 MPH. The City Police will aggressively issue speeding tickets. A survey will then be submitted to the community to determine their reaction.

The survey on this same subject I conducted in February of this year was deemed to be unscientific and therefore unacceptable to those who wanted a different answer. Survey results. This time the survey questions will be created by the City of Henderson traffic experts.

These are the same "experts" that brought you the ridiculous 45 MPH on the eight lane St. Rose Parkway following a number of years of 55 MPH on a two lane highway.  These same "experts" placed a 35 MPH limit on Volunteer, 35 MPH on Eastern Avenue south of Anthem Village Drive. They are also the ones that caused 35 MPH to be posted on Pecos Road, no it's 45 MPH, no it's 35 MPH! I'm so confused! Look! That sign reads 45 MPH! In all fairness, these "experts" are "Traffic Engineers."

The Federal Government has decreed that States that accept Federal Highway funds, must provide speed limits which have been "engineered" in order to collect speeding tickets. If they do not, the State cannot receive Federal Highway construction funds!

I can only assume that a Traffic Engineer from the City of Henderson can wave a magic wand and declare a speed limit as having been "engineered."

In spite of all of that, safety of the residents should be the prime concern of our leaders and government officials. The posting of a 35 mile speed limit will cause several things to happen:

  1. Golf carts will be legal on the Loop!
  2. Golf carts will become the unintended targets of vehicles hurtling down the roadway.
  3. People will get hurt. (On this subject, our leaders are in denial.)

For the results of a multi-year study of the changing of posted speed limits read this: http://www.tfhrc.gov///safety/rd97002.htm

You will note this near the end of the article, especially that highlighted in yellow:

Neither raising nor lowering the speed limit had much effect on vehicle speeds. The mean speeds and the 85th percentile speeds did not change more than 1 or 2 mi/h (1.6 or 3.2 km/h), even for speed limit changes based on the amount the posted speed limit was altered.

The percent compliance with the posted speed limits improved when the speed limits were raised. When the speed limits were lowered, the compliance decreased.

Think of the folks that will have received traffic citations at this lower limit, and the City eventually determines that the lower limit is not prudent. Some of us receiving the citations, may have reached the max allowed by their insurance company and have either had their insurance cancelled or the rates drastically increased.

Insurance cancelled for exceeding a speed limit for yet another  "study."

You can read the entire Federal study here: http://www.tfhrc.gov///safety/rd97002.htm

Read and believe.
