Arthritis
Although there are over 109 different forms of
arthritis, the most common forms are rheumatoid and
osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative process caused by the wearing
away of cartilage, leaving two surfaces of bone in contact with
each other. The majority of people with osteoarthritis have little
pain or stiffness.
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an inflammation of the membrane
surrounding joints. It is often associated with pain and swelling
in one or more joints.
The benefits of exercise include stronger muscles and bones,
improved cardiorespiratory fitness, and improved psychosocial
well-being. Exercise is contraindicated during inflammatory
periods of arthritis because exercise can worsen the process.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES FOR ARTHRITIS:
- Avoid quick or excessive movement. Try a
low-impact cardio class or an aquacise class.
- Exercise sessions should be frequent and low
intensity.
- Exercise intensity and duration should be
reduce or avoided during periods of inflammation or pain.
- Give yourself more time to warm-up and cool
down.
- Modify your exercise sessions in terms of
intensity and duration according to how you feel.
Thanks
