Sun City Anthem Garden Club news

The Master Gardeners operate an experimental orchard in the north end of the Las Vegas Valley. The Master Gardeners operate under the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) Cooperative Extension. http://www.unce.unr.edu/southern

The orchard was started about seven years ago. An important part of the study is to determine which fruit trees will produce fruit in this valley. A determining factor for producing fruit is the chill hours for a given variety of fruit. For example, the orchard has 14 cherry trees representing four varieties of cherries. The minimum chill hours for these varieties range from 700 to 800 hours. In the past seven years the cherries have produced only six cherries, a disappointing yield. That's right, six cherries in seven years. Anthem residents who want cherries should buy them in the market.

Peach trees are more fruitful. The orchard has 123 peach trees representing 26 varieties (Arctic Supreme, Babcock, Pink Lady, etc.) with chill hours ranging from 100 to 800.

The Master Gardeners sell bushels of peaches and other fruits in a Farmers Market every year. They weigh the fruit from each and every tree and keep copious records for publication.

The orchard has a total of 517 varieties of fruit and nut trees, including some trees which bear three kinds of fruit on the same tree and 37 varieties of grapes.

Getting down to specifics, below is a breakdown on the actual trees. The first number indicates the total number of trees; the second number shows the number of cultivars. Using peaches as an example, there are 126 peach trees representing 26 cultivars.

Trumpets Liaison Committee news

Fellow residents:

I am pleased to advise you of some important developments regarding Trumpets, OUR restaurant at Sun City Anthem. These developments are just the first response to the needs of you, our residents, as expressed to Trumpets management by your Trumpets Liaison Committee and through your comments offered via numerous communications channels.

Trumpets has a new restaurant manager, John D’Agostino, a young but experienced restaurateur whose mantra is, “Trumpets belongs to the residents, and they should have what they want for their restaurant."

Here are some of the first changes being made:

White tablecloth dining is back. You deserve a unique restaurant experience, and a return to a little class is one way to accomplish this.

Most days of the week, a members-only lunch is being offered for the reasonable price of $6.95. The four choices will include a soup-and-salad combination as well as three different entrees.

The early-bird Casual Fare menu is being restored, Tuesday through Thursday evenings.

Many residents have told us they desire something lighter than a full-course dinner, so most nights will feature a members-only dinner menu of soup or salad and choice of several entrees (with vegetables) for $12.95.

The Monday evening $19.95 members-only dinners will continue for the next several weeks, after which a decision will be made on retaining this program.

Residents have told us they want a more-affordable and enjoyable dining experience at Trumpets, and the more we patronize the restaurant, the greater the chance to hold the line on dues increases. So please give Trumpets a try, say hello to manager John D’Agostino, and let us know what you think of the changes, as well as sharing your ideas about what we can do to further improve YOUR restaurant for your dining pleasure.
