Habitat for Humanity

Isn't it interesting how often something we have just learned about becomes the subject of interest of others? Chuck Davis' Anthem Compendium covered the topic of Weep Screeds only a week after I had learned about these appliances while working as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity at their home sites on East Merlayne Drive across from Hinman Elementary School.

One of the side benefits of working with Habitat as a volunteer is what I am learning about home construction, codes and standards. Last Thursday the weep screeds were ready to be added near the slab at the bottom of the chicken wire mesh over which the stucco is placed. There are two homes in this location. One has the stucco on and the other is getting ready to be stuccoed.

For more information on being a volunteer you can contact Habitat for Humanity at www.habitatlasvegas.org  The process includes a self study test about the organization and how it operates that is taken online. Then a volunteer coordinator will contact you to set up a work site and days. You work when you are available. I try to work every Thursday at either the Henderson or the North Las Vegas home sites.
