Fitness Center notice

It is important to understand that most individuals 65 and over can participate safely in regular physical activity, both endurance and strength training. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the Standards and Guidelines of the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America for Senior Fitness recommend the following:

  • Strength Training in healthy senior participants: Frequency of two times per week minimum, a minimum of one set per muscle group and 8 to 12 repetitions per set at moderate to slow speed, exercising 8 to 10 different muscle groups. Allow one day for the muscles to recover before working them again.
  • Cardiovascular Conditioning is recommended beginning at a low to moderate intensity, three to five times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes. A more frequent, longer duration activity at a low to moderate intensity will produce positive physiological changes within an aging body with less injury occurring.
  • Balance, a physical performance variable, is typically found to decrease with age and is thought to be an important factor relative to the prevention of falls. The chances are about one in three that individuals who have reached the age of 80 will suffer an injurious fall. Exercise and/or activity has been found to significantly reduce the loss of balance in the elderly, particularly elderly women.
  • Flexibly is another area of concern. Flexibility tends to be lost due to connective tissue stiffening and a decrease in mobility with age. However, regular exercise can help reduce the loss of flexibility.

For your health.
