Our Friend, Len Penn
Our Friend, Len Penn
It is not often in life that one has the privilege of knowing and
working with a person who so clearly defines the words gentleman
and friend. It is not often in life that a man surfaces who is
willing to work tirelessly for his community without consideration
for personal praise or recognition and, it is not often that we
meet and know a man with a defined love for his God, his family,
and his country.
We here at Sun City are fortunate to have known a man with all of
these qualities and more. We all called him friend because he had
no enemies. We loved him because he was our brother. We respected
him because he worked hard for the causes he believed in.
Len Penn passed away Wednesday morning, August 17, 2005 of a
massive coronary. He passed away sitting next to the person that
he loved deeply, his wife Millie. Len was born in New York City in
1938. He was an only child. He graduated Cardinal Hayes High
School and Rutgers University. He served aboard an aircraft
carrier with the United States Navy, where after 4 years, he left
to enter the banking business. Len first worked for the Bank of
America, and later with JP Morgan where he served as Vice
President. He is survived by his wife, Millie; son, Anthony;
daughter, Veronica Turner; stepdaughter, Tami Morrison; and
stepson, Anwar Morrison.
In life, Len defined the word gentleman for he was both a
gentleman and a gentle man. He defined the word friend for he was
always loyal, trustworthy, and true. If you needed him, or if he
thought you needed him, he was there for you. We all know that
Len’s twin passions were golf and his friends. There were few days
of the week when Len was not playing golf and every day he was
with friends.
Len never sought praise or recognition for the things that he did
for the community and his friends. I doubt most of you are aware
of his love for and dedication to Sun City Anthem and its
residents. For 2 terms Len was President of the Men’s Golf Club.
He worked tirelessly with me on the Negotiating team, the team
that brought the community it’s second and soon it’s third
recreation center. He also served on the Oversight Committee, the
Lifestyle Task Force of the Transition Committee, and the
Trumpet’s Liaisons\ Committee. Lenny was a member of the two man
resident team that consulted with Del Webb on resident issues
centered around the sale of the Revere Golf courses to Troon Golf.
He helped write the language ensuring that SCA residents would
have unique privileges with respect to the use of the Revere golf
courses.
Len was my close friend and I know he was a friend to you as well.
While he is gone now, I know each of us will remember him for the
unique part he played in our lives.

Oh! The Secrecy of it!
We mere residents might become confused…
An Editorial
When the Transition
Committee’s Lifestyle Task Force chair read the Task Forces’
report at a Board of Directors meeting, I asked for a copy of the
chair’s report. I was turned down. It seems that the reading of
the report in a gathering of approximately 230 residents was
deemed sufficient to communicate its content to the Community. The
report contained a myriad of heinous provisions that one could
only guess at the extent of their damage to our way of life here
in Sun City Anthem. That report should have been incorporated into
the minutes of the meeting. “But, that has never been done in the
past!”
During the recent Elections for the Board of Director, each and
every candidate talked about better communication, less secrecy,
more open discussion of the issues. In order to provide
information that the Del Webb management folks conducting the
Builders Forum failed to do, Board President David Weil issued a
report named Status of Independence Center dated August 16, 2005
stating in part:
“The Board approved on an
interim basis the proposed Lifestyles Policy and Procedure, so
that scheduling and use of the Multi-purpose Rooms can happen
today.”
When I asked for a copy of the
“interim” document to post on the new web site, I was turned down
with this comment:
“…final approval from the Board at the August Board meeting. Will
forward a copy as soon as we get the approval….”
I am told that:
- “…meetings
and workshops have been open to the residents and I really can't
see why we are being accused of
secrecy….”
- “We are not
keeping the document "secret."”
- “Rest
assured, you as well as any interested parties, will have the
document as soon as we can get it to you in the form that will
be implemented.”
- “I don't
think it is in the best interests of the community to have a
formal policy that all interim documents belong on the community
Web site while they are still works in progress. Doing so would,
in many cases, cause a great deal of unnecessary confusion on
the part of people reading them.”
- “What does
it matter? It will be available following the next Board
Meeting.”
In spite of the newly elected
board member’s pledge of “no secrets” the inability to get
permission to publish that “work in progress” indicates loud and
clear that secrecy remains the watch word of our newly elected
Board of Directors.
Secrecy is the condition of hiding information from others.
