Sun City Anthem Choraliers

If you would like to join the Anthem Choraliers for an interesting experience of singing a variety of musics, even doing solos, please feel free to join this fun group. Rehearsals are every Monday morning, 9:00-11:00, in the Delaware Room. We presently have 32 members and are growing. Our tenor/bass section is strong. More sopranos and altos are needed, but all voice ranges are very welcome. We have some exciting events coming up.

ANGLE PROPERTY TAX INITIATIVE FILED THURSDAY

The Angle Property Tax Initiative (named after sponsor Assemblywoman Sharron Angle) which is a California Prop 13 style property tax limitation was filed Thursday September 1st by Sharron Angle and We The People Nevada with the Nevada Secretary of State. A new law SB 224 which passed this year (promoted by Dean Heller and Randolph Townsend) makes it so the wording on the petition can be challenged 30 days after filing. That makes it so that if a challenge goes through all the petitions signed up to that point would be invalid. We The People Nevada decided that since we do not want to waste effort and discourage people it would be wise to wait until October 1st to start the signature drive.

Get ready folks! We are very excited and looking forward to getting the needed signatures with the help of our volunteers. It is very important that we work hard and succeed. We know that the 3% property tax was solely intended to keep us from passing this initiative. If we should fail, it will definitely be repealed by the liberal controlled legislature. This initiative writes it into the Nevada Constitution and makes it permanent and has other major advantages. It limits the increases to 2% annually and protects renters from increases which the current 3% cap does not.

Starting October 1st we will open an office in Reno where you can go to sign the petition. There you will be able to get materials, etc. We are looking for people to gather signatures, set up association meetings or town hall type meetings, help organize volunteers, etc. If you would like to help send us an e-mail at nevadapeople@sbcglobal.net ."

Editor's note: As I did during the last effort, I will also have materials available. I'll keep you informed.

An Editorial

Fear mongering

You have read the stories, and viewed the TV programs about reporters and news anchors that either fabricated their stories or didn't check the veracity of the source.

It turns out that this is not a problem only with national figures, but also much more local.

A recent e-mail report read:

"Those hotel room cards! Instead of turning them back in to the hotel or leaving them in the room when you leave, KEEP THEM and destroy them later as they contain your ID information along with your valuable credit card number for use by unauthorized persons who know what to do with them."

The folks at Snopes.com report:

"Claim: Hotel room keycards are routinely encoded with personal information which can be easily harvested by thieves.

Status: False."

When you receive crime-related warnings, check them out by searching for a few words in the message. The blue words in  quoted item above were used to search at: http://www.snopes.com/snopes.asp

Responsibility?

President George W. Bush says: "...unacceptable..." Yet, the Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is still drawing his salary! The process is more important than results!

Sun City Anthem Gardening Club meeting
Anthem Center
September 15, 2005 at 9:00 a.m.

Popular horticulturist and author, Linn Mills will be our speaker for our September meeting of the Garden Club.

Linn's excellent book, "Nevada Gardener's Guide", is a must for anyone planning or maintaining a garden in Anthem. The original release in 2001 had thumbnail photographs of each recommendation in the center pages of the book. The 2004 updated edition (272 pages) has large color photographs on the same page as the text for each annual, perennial, bulb, cactus, ornamental grass, palm, ground cover, rose, shrub, vine and tree. All are rated for suitability of each region of Nevada from Elko to Henderson.

Copies of this book will be available for purchase at the meeting and Linn will be pleased to sign copies for attendees.

On top of all that, Linn is an excellent and humorous speaker. Bring your questions for the lively Q&A session.

Also bring something from your garden to show, tell, or question. There will be a drawing for those who bring something from their garden, live or dead, flora or fauna :-)

Join us for coffee and socialization at 9:00 a.m. with Linn's presentation starting at 9:30 a.m..

Non-members welcome for this special meeting.
