Property Tax Relief
Committee
A group of has met to organize the Property Tax Relief Committee.
The Committee's purpose is to circulate petitions that will place
some important initiatives on the ballot. The Committee can't do
the job by itself. It needs your help gathering signatures.
If you would like to volunteer, an
organizational meeting will be held on Saturday, September 24 at
10:00 a.m. (Anthem Center, room to be determined.) To help
room scheduling, please R.S.V.P to John Waterhouse
Phone: 492-0186.
John has volunteered to serve as the Committee Chair.
For some advance reading:
-
http://www.wethepeoplenevada.org/index.htm The primary
source of information on the Angle Property Tax Restraint
Initiative a proposed Nevada Constitutional amemdment.
-
http://www.tasc4nevada.com/ By State Senator Bob
Beers. Nevada's proposed Constitutional amendment is called TASC
instead of TABOR (Tax And Spending Control) but the concepts are
the same.
We the People Nevada's web site
summarizes the Angle Property Tax Restraint Initiative thusly:
-
The initiative will be placed on
the ballot in 2006 and in 2008 and if voted in by the people
will become part of the State Law.
-
After that Property taxes will go
back to the 2003/2004 year levels for all current property
owners. So if it is raised between now and then you are
protected.
-
The Property Tax on your home
cannot be raised more than 2% per year (less if the CPI index is
less). Even if property values go up 50% a year your taxes will
be limited to 2% or less. This will apply even for new
homeowners who buy homes later. A 2/3 vote of the people can
raise the taxes for special reasons. If the Consumer Price Index
goes down then taxes will have to go down proportionately.
-
You will be protecting the
elderly and low income people who are in fixed incomes from
losing their homes. You also will keep the be keeping the
government from stealing the money that families need to use to
raise their children.
-
The property tax will be limited
to 1% of the taxable value for people who buy homes later. That
way it will be easy for you to figure your taxes and taxes will
be fair and consistent for everybody.
-
A person 62 years of age or older
may move and carry their tax limitation on their new home.
-
No new property transfer taxes
may be installed.
-
RENTERS This will help you too!
Rental rates will increase in proportion to any property tax
increases so this will protect you from future rent increases.
