Once again the
"Investigative Reporter" has failed to investigate before
reporting.
In the guise of apologizing for
prior misstatements, Mr. Johnson again assails the accounting
practices of The Minuteman Foundation, Inc. As the Co-founder and
Treasurer, I hope the following will set the matter straight. I quote Mr. Johnson:
"...to meet the needs sponsored
by the Community Service Club. That should be their choice since
they are the ones make the gift. However, Mr. West has been
unable to explain why the Foundation does not wish to provide
members with this particular option."
"...All monies received will go into the general, unrestricted
fund...."
"While the above may have the appearance of the donor being able
to “designate” the accounting fund into which their donation is
placed, that is simply not the case, at least according to the
Foundation’s treasurer, Chuck Davis."
-
In accordance with The Minuteman Foundation's
governing documents the Foundation has no members.
-
There seems to be confusion
regarding the term "fund."
-
The Minuteman Foundation added
Classes a couple of years ago. I assume the above statement was
based on discussions prior to that action.
The Foundation keeps track of
donations by "Class." At this time, there has been no "fund"
established. I will explain both as they relate to the
Foundation's Accounting system and possible future revisions.
Class:
When an individual or firm wishes to make a relatively small
donation for a specified purpose, the Foundation's Board of
Trustees determines whether the purpose is within the Foundation's
scope of activities.
A "Class" is then established and the donation is accepted.
Additional donations may be solicited for the designated purpose,
as was the case for the amounts received for Channel 99. A valley
business donated $2,500 and later
resident donated $5,000 contingent on the Foundation receiving an
equal or greater amount from other donors. Disbursements for the
designated purpose are also recorded against the "Class." The specific
Class appears on all Contribution Receipts issued by the
Foundation. The Current donation Classes are Joy, Memorial, Community
Service Club Thank You, Community Service Club and Channel 99. Except for the
Community Service Club Channel 99
class, the other donations are to date Unrestricted.
Class is also used to determine the success of various programs
such as Bingo, Ball, and Golf. Revenue and Expense reports may be
generated by Class. Net proceeds from these events are
Unrestricted.
Funds
The Foundation's Web site describes Funds. Funds are generally
much larger in amount and separate bank accounts may be
established for tighter control and reporting within the donor's
wishes. The donor's preparation generally involves legal, tax and
other professional advisors.

PayPal
Again, without knowledge of the limits of the PayPal donation
option, Mr. Johnson suggests: "...If they chose to, the MMF could
provide members with an option to donate to a “designated” fund
account. This is illustrated in the following example:..."
PayPal offers no such options.
I suggest to Mr. Johnson that he "investigate before reporting."
