Anthem "Forest" Desecration
Over 400 trees estimated to be worth over one
hundred thousand dollars in replacement costs have been cut off in the past couple of
weeks, and the incident rate is increasing every day. The
criminals seem to be daring us to try to catch them! They have
even dared to cut trees at the entrance to the Anthem Center
during the morning!
However, the damage is mostly limited to the Anthem Parkway and
Sun City Anthem Drive, but the attacks may be spreading into other
areas—perhaps the villages.
Whomever is doing it has a clever approach using something like a
small electric saw or a fine-toothed pruning saw, and they have
not yet been detected. Even what appears to be normal activity
such as street maintenance, construction workers, gardening, grass
removal, and jogging/walking should be observed carefully. Some
theories are that individuals disguised as maintenance or
construction workers are cutting some of the trees during the day,
and some have seen groups of joggers during the sundown to dawn
periods behaving very suspiciously along the parkway.
No one has yet to come up with a credible theory on why this is
happening. We must take this assault on our community very
seriously as it could easily spread into other types of community
damage if not stopped. We have more that 9,300 pairs of eyes living here and
many people with lots of spare time to help augment the Henderson
Police and Anthem Security Patrol.
These assaults on our trees are every resident's problem, and it
will probably not get solved until the whole Anthem community
(including Solara, Country Club and others who share the community
resources) gets involved! Moreover, individuals in private
vehicles are much more likely to be able to spot such criminal
behavior than highly visible security patrol and police vehicles.
I suggest that everyone carry disposable cameras
and/or cell phones in their cars on every trip throughout our
community—at all hours of the day and night. We should swing by
the Parkway coming to and from home and observe/record the people
and vehicles along Anthem Blvd/Parkway and the intersections. We
should take the time to stop and take pictures (day and night),
talk to people, and make notes about vehicles and tree damage—as
well as seemingly suspicious actions or behavior.
No person or vehicle of any type along Anthem Parkway should be
exempt from being observed, photographed or license plate recorded
until the criminals are caught. The public has a right to be on
such a public street, but our community also has the right to try
and identify and report on the criminals attacking our properties.
Of course, we should expect all residents to welcome getting
involved, being asked about their parkway activities, and
reporting their relevant observations during the past month. Not
only is our association losing a great deal of money from the loss
of these important tree assets, we will all be losing peace of
mind until the criminals can be stopped. Please do your part!
