Tree Cutting Suspect Arrested
Henderson, Nev. – A 58-year-old man was arrested early Saturday in
connection with at least 83 trees being cut down in the Sun City
Anthem area. The destroyed trees were valued at $57,000.
Douglas
Raymond Hoffman was charged with one felony count of injury to
other property (NRS 206.310). He was booked into the Henderson
Detention Center about 5:30 a.m. Saturday and released on $3,000
bond about six hours later.
Hoffman’s arrest came after a citizen was driving home from work
about 2:15 a.m. Saturday and noticed some trees had been cut down
that were standing the day before at Sun City Anthem Parkway and
Scotts Valley. The man then drove around the area searching for a
possible suspect.
At the intersection of Sun City Anthem and Anthem Parkway, the man
saw someone with his left hand on the trunk of a tree and his
right hand moving back and forth. The witness confronted the
suspect and found a handsaw concealed inside the suspect’s coat.
The witness took the man to a nearby firehouse and called police.
The suspect, later identified as Hoffman, denied any wrongdoing,
claiming he found the saw.
There have been several incidents of trees being cut down in the
Sun City Anthem area including the most recent incidents in
October and February. There have been no arrests in those cases.
The investigations into those crimes are continuing.
The trees that were cut down Saturday were in common areas of the
development and not in residents’ yards. The owner of the trees is
the Anthem Council, a group which oversees the community
associations and manages the landscape services for Anthem. The
council is controlled by Pulte Homes representatives.
Questions regarding the Anthem Council or Pulte Homes may be
directed to Allison Copening, Pulte Homes/Del Webb Director of
Public Affairs, (702) 914-4777 or cell phone (702) 496-6664.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Henderson Police
Department at 267-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
