"SEER" Ratings and What it Means for You?

Starting January 23rd, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is requiring that builders and manufacturers conform to a 13 seasonal energy efficiency rating or “SEER” standard for any new residential central air conditioners and heat pumps. A SEER rating is similar to a miles-per-galloon rating for automobiles and the new standard is a part of the government’s efforts to improve energy conservation. This standard increases the current SEER standard by 30 percent and amends the existing energy conservation standards for central air conditioners and heat pumps.

Some residents have been inquiring about this new government regulation and how it might affect them. Del Webb has installed 12 SEER units at Sun City Anthem since its inception (even though the previous code only required 10 SEER). While Del Webb is now required to install 13 SEER units on any homes built after the regulation takes effect, current homeowners are not required to update or change their current systems.

However, if a homeowner makes any alterations or repairs to an air conditioning unit or heat pump some time in the future, it is required that the change or replacement be consistent with the updated 13 SEER standard.

In areas of the country where outdated air conditioning units and/or older construction are more common, some homeowners are opting to upgrade to 13 SEER to conserve energy, but no update is required by current homeowners at this time. We hope this information clarifies the new SEER code. For more information, visit http://www.doe.gov  the Department of Energy’s website.

Anthem Entryway Water Feature Update

A few weeks ago, there was a small electrical fire in the Anthem entryway water feature’s vault (the control room of the feature). The fire damaged some equipment and new parts had to be ordered. The parts have arrived and repairs are currently being made. The expected completion date for the repairs is Wednesday, December 14th.

The Truth about Cell Phones and the National Do Not Call Registry

If you’ve received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database, rest assured that this is not the case. Telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal in most cases and will continue to be so. In response to recent e-mail campaigns urging consumers to place their cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission issue this advisory to give consumers the facts.
