State Committee Tells State
Capital
"Control Tax and Spending
CARSON CITY, Nev.— State Senator Bob Beers
submitted an amendment to Nevada’s state constitution on Monday
that will bring sanity back to Nevada’s state budget, which is the
fastest-growing state budget in the nation.
“Our Tax and Spending Control amendment is simple,” said Senator
Beers. “It holds politicians accountable to the same standards
that work in the real world, and requires voters to approve new
taxes or increases in tax rates.”
The Tax and Spending Control (TASC) initiative will allow annual
state spending increases equal to the rate of inflation plus
population growth, but require voter approval to expand government
faster than that rate. The initiative will also stabilize Nevada’s
budget process, which will better protect the state against budget
shortfalls and recession.
“The beauty of TASC is that it requires politicians to operate
with a sensible budget,” said Senator Beers. “Families,
businesses, and individuals all have to operate within their
budgets — I’m confident politicians can learn to do the same.”
For the last four years, the state government’s spending has grown
more than two times the state economy’s growth rate, which means
all citizens and businesses are shouldering an ever-increasing tax
burden. Beers maintains this is unacceptable, and that we must
reign in spending growth.
“We think Nevada’s citizens deserve a say in how much more of
their hard-earned money will be turned over to privileged
bureaucrats for them to spend,” added Senator Beers. “Our
initiative will do just that. It puts taxpayers in charge of
government and requires politicians to represent our citizens.”
Paul Adams, chairman of the Nevada Republican Party said, “Having
reviewed the TASC for Nevada language, I believe the authors have
taken extraordinary efforts to avoid the problems attributed to
the Colorado TABOR. The Republican Party is the Party of limited
government, minimal taxes and careful spending. I encourage all
voters to ignore the media spin, review the actual language of the
proposed initiative and make their own decision on what is an
appropriate limitation on the government’s power to tax.”
The State Tax And Spending Control Committee is a growing
statewide organization that supports legislation to restrain state
spending and provide tax relief. For more information, visit the
