No sooner...

In the last issue of the Anthem Compendium you read this:

At least once a week, I receive a message addressed to dozens of folks that warn us about some dire event if you don't take heed.

These messages almost always contain a phrase emphasizing that the message is "real" or "legitimate" and that you should send it to everyone in your address list. Both are clues that it probably isn't "real."

Naturally, I have now received two that are really true.

This is a part of the first message:

I had a wonderful morning, the heating unit went out of my dryer! Why does everything seem to fall apart this time of year!???

The guy that fixes things went in to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. We always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes. He told us that he wanted to show him something. He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. Now, this thing is like a mesh - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like - WELL......the hot water just laid on top of the mesh!!! It didn't go through it at all!!!

Guess what Snopes says on this one?

Claim:   Washing the lint filter in your clothes dryer can help extend the lifespan of that appliance.

Status:   True.

This is a part of the second one:

On July 15, MSNBC's "Connected" program discussed the July 7th London attacks. One of the guests was Pierre Rehov, a French filmmaker who has filmed six documentaries on the intifada by going undercover in the Palestinian areas. Pierre's upcoming film, "Suicide Killers," is based on interviews that he conducted with the families of suicide bombers and would-be bombers in an attempt to find out why they do it. Pierre agreed to a request for a Q&A interview here about his work on the new film.

Guess what Snopes says on the second one?

Claim:   E-mail reproduces interview with documentary filmmaker Pierre Rehov about the psychology of terrorism.

Status:   True.
